單片機是隨著電子計算機 ( 電腦 ) 的發(fā)展而產(chǎn)生的。隨著社會的發(fā)展和需求的提高，計算機 也在不斷地更新與發(fā)展。 由于計算機的產(chǎn)生是應(yīng)數(shù)值計算而產(chǎn)生的， 因此長期以來電子計算 機技術(shù)都是沿著滿足大量高速數(shù)值計算而發(fā)展的， 直到 20 世紀(jì) 70 年代， 電子計算機在數(shù)字 邏輯運算、 推理、 自動控制等方面顯露出非凡的功能后， 在各種控制領(lǐng)域開始對計算機技術(shù) 發(fā)展提出了與傳統(tǒng)大量高速計算完全不同的要求。 這些要求是： 面對控制對象、 面對各種傳 感器信號、面對人機交互操作控制、能方便地嵌入工控應(yīng)用系統(tǒng)中等。

為了實現(xiàn)上述要求， 近年來， 單片微型計算機 ( 簡稱單片機 ) 應(yīng)運而生。 單片機也被稱作 “微 控制器” 、 “嵌入式微控制器” 。單片機一詞最初是源于 SCM 。在單片機誕生時， SCM 是一 個準(zhǔn)確、流行的稱謂， “單片機”一詞準(zhǔn)確地表達了這—概念。隨著 SCM 在技術(shù)上、體系 結(jié)構(gòu)上不斷擴展其控制功能，單片機已不能用“單片微型計算機”來準(zhǔn)確表達其內(nèi)涵。國際 上逐漸采用 "MCU"(Micro?Controller?Unit) 來代替， 形成了單片機界公認(rèn)的、 最終統(tǒng)一的名詞。 在國內(nèi)因為“單片機”一詞已約定俗成，故而繼續(xù)沿用。 

單片計算機是將電子計算機的基本環(huán)節(jié) , 如 :CPU( 又稱中央處理器 , 主要由運算器 , 控制器組 成 ), 存儲器 , 總線 , 輸入輸出接口等 , 采用集成電路技術(shù)集成在一片硅基片上 . 由于單片計算機 體積很小 ( 僅手指般大小 ), 功能強 ( 具有一個簡單計算機的功能 ), 因而廣泛用于電子設(shè)備中作 控制器之用 . 目前 , 大到導(dǎo)彈火箭國防尖端武器 , 小至電視機微波爐等現(xiàn)代家用電器 , 內(nèi)中都毫 無例外地運用單片計算機作為控制器 . 因此 , 從控制的觀點 , 我們也常稱它為單片微控制器 。
